An application for a new rock-climbing gym will go before the Davis Planning Commission at its meeting next week.

The commission meets at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26 in the Community Chambers of city offices, 23 Russell Blvd. in Davis.

On the agenda is the conditional-use permit application for The Boulder Field, which would fill 54,674 square feet at 607 Peña Drive. The space is zoned for light industrial/business park. The notice of the public hearing says commercial recreation falls within those parameters. I believe this is the same area where Davis Diamonds Gymnastics was before it moved across the freeway.

The Boulder Field has a gym in Sacramento, at 8425 Belvedere Ave., Suite 100, that includes a fitness area with gymnastics rings, kettle bells, weights and cardio equipment, a yoga studio with daily classes for all levels, and bouldering terrain. There are locker rooms, showers and a sauna. The facility also features a cafe that serves Temple Coffee, local beer and kombucha, a retail shop, and a lounge with work spaces. I don’t yet know if the Davis plan has similar offerings.

According to its website, monthly dues are $99 for individuals, with discounts for youths, students and seniors. For yoga, it offers vinyasa, vinyasa flow, power vinyasa and yin, with a drop-in rate of $20. Classes are offered in the early evenings.

I’ve been leaving messages for the founder and the general manager but have not heard back.
