The new climbing gym coming to Davis has a name and a hopeful timeline for opening. The owner of The Stack Climbing + Fitness said he’s looking to open in late February or early March. It’s at 607 Peña Drive.

Half of the 12,000-square-foot facility will be bouldering terrain on walls as high as 14.5 feet. A child-specific climbing area will be available too.

A floor with 14 inches of padding will soften climbers’ falls. That’s important, because as owner Carlo Traversi said, “As it’s a bouldering-only gym, no ropes will be used, and climbers will fall onto the padded floor.”

One 12-by-12-foot training wall will allow climbers to adjust the gradient, and set their path with an app, illuminating lights behind the holds.

There will be a cardio and weight-training area, showers and locker rooms, and a small cafe featuring local coffee, kombucha and beer.

The cafe-gym combination is something I think will work well in Davis. It provides a chance for patrons to linger and connect with others who have a shared interest. I’ve noticed it’s a popular concept for yoga studios in Indonesia and Cambodia. Many offer a combo deal for those who want to stay after class for a drink or a meal. With so many people working remotely, it’s a great way to build community.

Construction is underway on the bathrooms, and the front desk and cafe area, Traversi said. The climbing walls will arrive for installation in the next six weeks.

Traversi is an owner of The Boulder Field, at 8425 Belvedere Ave., Suite 100, in Sacramento. There’s some overlap of ownership and concept but they won’t be the same. He’s also building a climbing gym in Chico that will go by the Stack Climbing + Fitness name.

The Davis gym plans to offer monthly memberships with access to the Chico and Sacramento locations. Patrons may also purchase day passes or punch cards. There will be adult classes and private training, youth classes, programs and camps, and opportunities for facility rentals for events.
