The discount retailer Nordstrom Rack had a soft opening for its Davis store on Wednesday, drawing crowds of local shoppers eager to see the debut of The Davis Collection’s first merchant.

The store is at 835 Russell Blvd, Suite 150, in Davis, near Trader Joe’s. I am working remotely from Washington, D.C., this week but my spies Kate and Bob Bowen were there, taking photos. Nordstrom regulars who are on the company’s email list received invitations to Tuesday’s event.

More than 100 customers waited for entry to the store on Tuesday. The event was from 4 to 8 p.m., but at 3:45 p.m., the line snaked back and forth to the future Ulta entrance next door.

“It was a scene!” Kate Bowen said. “The place was packed with happy shoppers, helpful team members and cool merchandise.”

She said the employee who helped them check out learned about the store by reading Comings & Goings.

The official grand opening is 8 a.m. Thursday. Typical hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and till 8 p.m. on weekends.

→ Substack ads: As I mentioned, I’m in Washington, D.C. for vacation. Although I’ve been four times (twice as a teen and two more times for my work), my husband has never been. We’ve seen lots of museums and sites, and spent all afternoon Tuesday at the African-American History Museum, which we highly recommend. I do miss the Newseum, which closed in 2019.

It was fun to see the Substack ads at the metro stations (although my squinting frown in the video doesn’t show my delight). The company did a big publicity push to coincide with the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and alternative events on April 26.
