You may remember my coverage of 3rd & U Cafe when it closed on Nov. 15. A new owner has plans for the space at 223 Third St.
Ali Moghaddam, who owns Ali Baba across the street at 220 Third St., is leasing the space – and keeping the name.
Moghaddam is friends with the longtime owners of 3rd & U, Ted Dacong and his wife Mary, who operated the cafe for 17 years. Mary’s health issues were cited in the closure. A completed GoFundMe fundraiser raised $21,325 to help the family with medical expenses.
“During its glory days, 3rd & U was an institution, a staple of Third Street, that’s why I am keeping the same name,” Moghaddam said.
He said, “the menus will consist of appetizers, burgers, salads, grilled cheese, one pasta, a dessert and probably six to eight beers. If everything goes according to plan, I plan on opening July 6th.”
Ali Baba sells Persian food, including its popular breakfast burritos, gyros, kebobs, burgers, dips and sides.

→ Back to the office: After the pandemic closed its downtown headquarters five years ago, the Davis Chamber of Commerce finally has a public office again.
The space, at 1949 Fifth St., Suite 101, is in a small strip of units next to the Davis field office of the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Chamber Executive Director Carrie Rohrbach said it was time. “Our board and staff determined that the benefits of a permanent, accessible office to keep the Chamber visible outweighed the benefit of working remotely.”
She added, “We are so excited. … During the last few years (we) have appreciated our members who have loaned us their spaces for minor gatherings and office use. Now, with our own office, we are looking forward to hosting visitors to our community, members to leave brochures for our visitors, the opportunity to hold meetings, and so much more.”
