Longtime Chinese food restaurant to close

Ding How, the oldest Chinese food restaurant in Davis, will close next year. It’s at 640 W. Covell Blvd., in Anderson Plaza.
It originally planned to close at the end of this month, citing rising rent. However, an employee told Comings & Goings that the landlord offered an extension of its lease. But that only postpones plans for a few months. The employee did not say if the owners have set a closing date.
The eatery specializes in Mandarin and vegetarian cuisine. Though its website touts it as the first Chinese food in Davis, it opened in 1979, a few years after the long-gone Honorable Gee’s.
The website says Ding How is famous for its Mandarin sauce, General Tso’s chicken, house chow fun, crab and cream cheese wontons, hot and sour soup, honey walnut prawns, Mongolian beef and tasty fortune cookies.
“If it’s not on the menu, we will create your desired dish!” it says.
My husband and I frequented it a lot as college students in the late 1980s. We were hooked on the lunch deals, moo shu pork, and hot and sour soup. Back then, it had a second location on G Street downtown: Ding How II.
