After 17 years, 3rd & U Cafe will serve its last beer on Friday. (Photo by Wendy Weitzel)

3rd & U Cafe is closing. The bar and restaurant at 223 Third St. will serve its last beer on Friday.

I popped over to the cafe on Wednesday afternoon. The owner said he didn’t have time to speak with me because he had to take his wife to a doctor’s appointment. When I asked why the business was closing, he said it was because his wife was ill.

In an Instagram post on Thursday, the cafe issued the following statement: “(Due) to unforeseen health issues, our last day (will) be Friday 11/15. Thank you for an amazing 17 years. We will always cherish the time we had serving the UC Davis community.”

The cafe is known for its breakfast burritos and its great discounts when you order two beers at a time. Its patio and proximity to the UC Davis campus made it a great student hangout.

Read below to learn what will fill the Papa Murphy’s space in Anderson Plaza. (Photo by Wendy Weitzel)

→ Pizza swap: As I forecasted, the Papa Murphy’s in Anderson Plaza closed earlier this month. It was at 640 W. Covell Blvd., Suite G, for more than 30 years. I have learned what will replace it.
