Shah’s Halal Food, a well-known local food truck, is opening its first Davis brick-and-mortar restaurant on Monday. It’s at 865 Russell Blvd., Suite 120, in The Davis Collection.

The New York-based chain launched in 2005. The local franchise started in 2009 at the UC Davis Silo. In 2023, owners Bahagul Samar of Sacramento and Tory Mashriqi of El Dorado Hills opened a restaurant in West Sacramento, at 3000 W. Capitol Ave.

It has two food trucks in town: at the Silo and behind The Davis Collection. When the restaurant opens, the one parked at the shopping center will shut down.

Tory’s daughter Zohra Mashriqi is the Davis restaurant’s manager. She said the customer favorite on the menu is chicken over rice, served with seasoned rice, grilled chicken, and a side of fresh salad.

Platter options, served over rice, include lamb, chicken/lamb combo, fish, falafel (chickpea fritters), kofta (long meatballs on skewer), and chapli (flat minced-meat patty) and fries. For guests who prefer something handheld, there are several varieties of gyros made with the same protein options. For a lighter option, there are salads with added protein.

The menu also has cheeseburgers, regular and spicy chicken sandwiches, Philly cheesesteaks, and chicken cheesesteaks. Sides offered are chicken nuggets, hot wings, French fries, pakora chips, baklava, pita bread and hummus.

The Davis restaurant will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
