Alyssa Bulfer explains plans for Let Them Eat Cake in an Instagram post. (Instagram photo a Let Them Eat Cake video)

The Davis bakery Let Them Eat Cake is closing its storefront, likely at the end of the month. Owner Alyssa Bulfer made the announcement in an Instagram post.

In the video, Bulfer said she’s taking the business in a different direction. “We’ve been playing around with this idea for quite a while of no longer having a storefront, so from here on out we will be downsizing, and will primarily be a wedding cake business and some custom cakes.”

Fighting back tears, Bulfer shared that the business has not been sold, but that’s “not for lack of trying.” Bulfer is the bakery’s third owner. Paulette Coffman opened Let Them Eat Cake in 2009 on L Street, and moved it to 310 C St. in 2011. Melody Steeples owned it from 2014 to 2016. Bulfer has owned it since, making her the bakery’s longest-running proprietor.

Not that they were the easiest years. Although she didn’t mention the pandemic in her video, it took its toll on many small businesses.

Bulfer said closing the shop at 310 C St. makes her sad. However, she and her teammates are not ready to say goodbye to the bakery itself. She plans a going away party for the store (date to be determined). The last day will be either right before or right after Christmas.

The bakery sells cupcakes, and offers online orders of kits to decorate your own cookies or gingerbread houses. You may also order Christmas tree cake slices, and a Christmas wreath pavlova. Visit its website for details.

The store’s rotation of cupcakes includes vegan, gluten-free and nut-free options. Posted hours are noon to 6 p.m. weekdays except Tuesdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekends.

“It’s truly been an honor serving this community and beyond,” she said in the post. “I am so humbled by all the support that we’ve had for the past nine years, and I am beyond grateful for all the memories I have here at 310 C Street.”

I left voicemail and email messages for Bulfer on Tuesday but did not hear back.
